Key terms — decoded.
The gaming hardware vocabulary, condensed. Every term you'll encounter in reviews, on spec sheets, and in the forum, with a one-line definition.
Polling rateHow often a peripheral reports its position to the PC per second (Hz). Higher means lower latency — critical for competitive input devices.
DPI / CPIDots (or counts) per inch — the sensitivity unit for mice. More DPI means more cursor travel per physical millimetre of movement.
LatencyTime between input and game response, measured in milliseconds. Lower is better across every device category.
Refresh rateHow many times a display redraws per second (Hz). 60 Hz is standard; competitive play typically targets 144 Hz or higher.
Response timeHow quickly a pixel transitions between colours (ms). Panel technology — IPS, TN, VA, OLED — determines the floor.
VRAMVideo RAM on a GPU used for frame buffers and textures. Ultrawide monitors and VR headsets stress it more than standard 1080p.
Actuation forceForce required to register a keyswitch (grams). Lower is faster; higher is more deliberate. The primary spec for keyboard feel.
Switch typeThe mechanism under each key or button — linear (smooth), tactile (bump), or clicky (bump + sound). Defines feel and acoustics.
Force feedback (FFB)Motor-driven resistance in steering wheels, flight sticks, and joysticks that translates simulation forces into physical sensation.
